If
Louis Armstrong's entire contribution to music consisted of
the stop-tim e
cornet breaks on "Potato Head Blues," his place in the American
Musical Pantheon would have long been secure. But "Potato Head
Blues," which in 1927 introduced Armstrong's Hot Seven, is but
one of the earth-moving numbers in this collection. For the
first time, "Satchmo the Great"'s Complete Hot Fives and Sevens
are available on CD in a single package.
Recorded between November 1925 and March 1929, these are the
performances on which Armstrong (1901-1971) firmly established
jazz as the art of the improviser, wrote the ground rules of
swing, taught the world to sing as it never had before, and
made "scat" more than just slang for "go away."
These are the sides that lit the skies. Never have they sounded
better, thanks to 21st century recording technology and the
dogged work of producer Phil Schaap, who searched the world
for the best possible original source material for every single
cut. In honor of Armstrong's centennial, here is the Thomas
Edison of American Music, in the full sunburst glory of his
genius.
At the banquet table of 20th century creative wonders - Picasso's
Cubist Period, late-period Yeats, the cinema of Kurosawa, Monet's
"Water Lillies," - the Hot Fives and Sevens have an honored
place.
OVERVIEW
The 4-CDs in this set comprise the complete output of Louis
Armstrong's seminal recordings of the 1920s, known around the
world for more than seven decades as the Hot Fives and the Hot
Sevens. It is the first comprehensive gathering of this material,
along with critically important bonus recordings.
This
legendary body of work by Armstrong totals some 89 tracks recorded
primarily in Chicago for OKeh Records. It is impossible to exaggerate
their importance!
Without doubt, these are the most important jazz recordings
- if not the most important recordings - of the 20th Century.
Louis Armstrong's Hot Five & Hot Seven Recordings are considered
the "Rosetta Stone" of jazz music, influencing every singer,
songwriter, instrumentalist, and even dancer from that point
forward. Armstrong impacted the 20th Century with the same magnitude
as a Picasso or an Einstein. In fact, there could have been
no Billie Holiday, Sinatra, Elvis, Beatles, Dylan etc. without
these recordings.
This
material has never been more painstakingly remastered or more
ornately packaged. This is the definitive Satchmo collection!
